In writing to his young protegé Timothy, the apostle Paul in his second letter to the young man, encouraged him to do three things. First he told Timothy he should “fan into flames the gift of God which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:7). Paul recognized that this particular young man had special gifts that God bad bestowed upon him. You may recall that when Paul first met Timothy, the lad was highly regarded by people who knew him (Acts 16:2) and Paul was persuaded to take Timothy under his wings and mentor him for ministry.

Secondly,  Paul made it clear to Timothy that he should follow his example and pass on or “entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others,” that which he had learned (2:2). In other words Timothy would be  part of passing on a legacy of faith that would eventually transcend generations.

Thirdly, Paul told Timothy that he should be diligent to be  approved, “a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2:15).

If one is to be successful in any thing, training is necessary. Fortune 500 companies spend millions on training for their employees. The same can be said of leadership; that is, training is necessary. The best leaders are those who have been trained. A huge part of Jesus’ earthly ministry involved training a team that would eventually help the church to grow. The exponential growth of the church from then to now,  can be attributed to good leadership as well.
